AFTER enduring a Covid-19 lockdown for more than a month, Shanghai saw a glimmer of hope earlier this week when the city government allowed some businesses to resume operations and production, and set a goal for normal life to return in June. What it is like in Shanghai as it cautiously takes the first step toward returning to normalcy?

A number of Shanghai residents reached by state-run tabloid Global Times on Monday said they were allowed to leave their compounds after securing approval from community workers, but only for a limited time and on nearby streets. A handful of shops and supermarkets may have reopened gradually, but the city is much quieter than in the pre-outbreak period.
