I ATTENDED the graduation ceremonies at the University of California at Berkeley last Saturday. Instructions sent out to attendees were like battle plans. What to wear (flat shoes, loose clothes, headwear, only transparent handbags, or tiny clutch bags, no backpacks or large umbrellas) with instructions to pass security, what gate to use, what floor to take at the football stadium where it was held.

As you can see only doting family members are ready for the field maneuvers demanded. I had a granddaughter graduating so like a doting grandmother I went. We figured we could not just drive over. It was the first graduation since the pandemic. There were 7,500 graduates and each was entitled to 10 tickets. Cars were restricted from the immediate surroundings of the football stadium. We were told to prepare for a half-hour walk. All parking lots had already been reserved. So, we took an Uber and the clued-in driver took several byways and left us to the half hour walk in good time.
