THE Power for People Coalition on Tuesday issued a plea to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to dismiss outright the motions for price adjustment filed by the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) and SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. to increase the rates they charge for electricity.

The two giant firms are asking for an increase to cover P15 billion losses incurred by SMC Global in the operations of its 1,200-megawatt (MW) Sual plant and the 1,200-MW Ilijan power plant amid the restrictions on supply from Malampaya, and the high cost of gas and coal in the world market.
