WHEN I made a declaration during the last days of the Duterte administration that there is a looming food crisis globally, some people may have thought that I was exaggerating matters.
But President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. immediately and fully understood the issue, and has pushed for an increase of the budget of the Department of Agriculture (DA) from P77 billion this year to P102 billion for 2023. And among his very first pronouncements our President made after taking the reins of the DA, is for the country to attain self-sufficiency in major food staples and eventually, food sovereignty.
