BRUSSELS: Inflation in the eurozone reached a new record in August, official data showed on Wednesday, increasing pressure on the European Central Bank (ECB) to hike rates to tame consumer prices fueled by the war in Ukraine.

Driven by soaring energy prices caused by Russia's invasion of its pro-West neighbor, the annual inflation rate in the 19-country single currency area accelerated to 9.1 percent last month, its highest since records began, according to Eurostat. The rate was 8.9 percent in July.
