Eala reaches 1st US Open singles finals

ALEX Eala made history as she became the first Filipino tennis player to reach the final of a Grand Slam singles event. The 17-year-old Eala did so by defeating Canadian Victoria Mboko, 6-1, 7-6(5), in the semifinals of the US Open Girls Singles at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York City early Saturday (Philippine time). Eala easily took the first set as she lost only the third game and won the rest.

Marcos' US trip seen to bring in more investments

PRESIDENT Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s upcoming visit to the United States is expected to bring in more investments in the country, creating more quality jobs for Filipinos, Go Negosyo founder Jose Maria "Joey" Concepcion 3rd said. Concepcion made the statement following the President's successful trips to Indonesia and Singapore, where he was able to bring home $14.36 billion in investment pledges.

US firm in $2.6B merger talks with Okada Manila

A $2.6 BILLION merger is in the works between a Philippine casino hotel and a US firm which, if closed, could result in the listing of the largest Filipino company on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Negotiations have been set between UE Resorts International Inc., the holding company behind Okada Manila, and 26 Capital Acquisition Corp., a US special purpose acquisition firm, after the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) returned control of the integrated casino hotel to Tiger Resort Asia Ltd. (TRAL), a UE subsidiary.

'No objection to Senate report on sugar row'

MALACAÑANG did not object to the recommendation of the Senate blue ribbon committee to file criminal and administrative charges against a senior official of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and three resigned officials of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) Board. Posting his reaction on his social media account, Executive Secretary Victor Rodriguez hailed members of the Senate Committee on Accountability of Public Officers and Investigations, better known as the blue ribbon committee, chaired by Sen. Francis Tolentino for their swift action in the unauthorized issuance of Sugar Order 4 (SO 4) and for recommending the filing of charges against those responsible for the illegal act.

Charles officially announced as king

King Charles 3rd was officially announced as Britain's monarch Saturday, in a pomp-filled ceremony steeped in ancient tradition and political symbolism — and, for the first time, broadcast live. Charles automatically became king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth 2nd, died on Thursday, but the accession ceremony is a key constitutional and ceremonial step in introducing the new monarch to the country. Scores of senior politicians past and present, including Prime Minister Liz Truss and five of her predecessors, gathered in the ornate state apartments at St. James's Palace for the meeting of the Accession Council. They met without Charles, officially confirming his title, King Charles 3rd. The king joined them to make a personal declaration, vowing to follow his mother's "inspiring example" as he took on the duties of monarch.

Distribution of state-school lands halted

AGRARIAN Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella 3rd said on Saturday that he has ordered a moratorium on the distribution of lands owned by state universities and colleges as mandated by Executive Order (EO) 75. EO 75, issued in 2019 by former president Rodrigo Duterte, tasked all departments, bureaus, offices and instrumentalities of the government to identify lands suitable for agriculture for distribution to landless war veterans, surviving spouses or orphaned children, retired military and police personnel, and agricultural courses graduates.

PCCI stresses need to manage supply chain

Over to business, with health restrictions easing and businesses slowly getting back up, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), through one of its sessions on Friday, stressed the importance of managing the supply chain to its members. In the plenary session titled "Supply Chain Scenario and Solutions in Times of Disruption," Procurement and Supply Institute of Asia (Pasia) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Charlie Villaseñor, described on how businesses used to take the supply chain for granted until the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine became reality
