SHANGHAI: China's capital Beijing and financial hub Shanghai were blanketed with security on Tuesday in the wake of nationwide rallies calling for political freedoms and an end to coronavirus lockdowns.

The Chinese leadership is facing a wave of protests not seen in decades, fueled by anger over the unrelenting lockdowns, as well as deep-rooted frustrations over China's political direction.
