THE economy is measured in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). The economy is defined by this formula: GDP = Consumption + Investment + Government Spending + Net Exports. In the Philippines, consumption is the biggest contributor. Often, we have negative net exports, as we import most anything — equipment, raw materials and food that we could grow in our soil or raise in our rivers and seas.
