JAKARTA: An offshore 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit near the Maluku islands in eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported, prompting a tsunami warning that was later lifted.

The epicenter of the tremor was 150 kilometers (93 miles) northwest of the eastern Indonesian island of Halmahera at a depth of 48 km.
