CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: The Ayala-Centrio Mall will play host to another FIDE-rated chess tournament in Cagayan de Oro City.

This time around, tournament organizers will give emphasis to students in the elementary, secondary and tertiary levels.

Dubbed as the GCF Students FIDE-Rated Rapid Chess Championships 2, it will be held today, January 21, at the Activity Center of the Ayala Mall with close to P40,000 in total cash prizes plus trophies and medals at stake to the winners.

The one-day tournament, sponsored by Erwin Culanag, the first nominee-representative of the Alliance of Certified Enforcers (ACE), will also have a blitz team event on four boards where adult players can participate.



"Among na-realize nga importante gyod ma-promote ang chess sa mga estudyante kay dakong tabang sa ila makakuha og scholarship in college as varsity players. Even in high school makadasig sab ni sa mga school owners to have their own sports program in chess (We realized the importance of promoting chess to students because this will help them get scholarships in college as varsity players. Even in high school, this will entice school owners to have their own sports program in chess)," said Ben Wabe of the organizing Golden Chess Friends.

Wabe told The Manila Times that the US-based Culanag, the former city information officer of the late mayor Vicente "Dongkoy" Emano, intends to hold chess tournaments for students in Cagayan de Oro every month.
