IN last week's column, I discussed the supreme irony of erecting a multimillion dollar state-of-the-art waste-to-energy facility in the Maldives, a nation that is facing obliteration due to climate change-induced rising sea levels. I felt there was more to explore about Maldives and the waste management project, thus this second piece.

First of all, the project has multiple funding partners. Aside from the Asian Development Bank which is extending a $38.21-million loan, the Asian Infrastructure Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank are backing the project with $40-million and $20-million loans, respectively. The ADB and the Japanese governments are providing grants totaling $45.18 million.
