When actor and politician Alfred Vargas was in grade school at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), he was fond of playing with fighting spiders. He would bring batches of the tiny eight-legged creature from the family farm in Sta. Maria, Bulacan, when he went home on weekends and made the spiders fight on a coconut midrib (tingting).
"I'd ask my friends [in Bulacan] to catch spiders every Saturday, and I'd put them inside matchboxes," Vargas recalled.
