ONE hundred thirty-nine of the Philippines' about 800 so-called political detainees are being held in facilities in Negros, according to a November 29 statement from the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP). One of the 139 is John Michael Tecson, a young man from Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental. Tecson was arrested in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, last year together with Ramon Patriarca, a high-ranking officer of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) Negros, and Carmen Jonahville Matarlo, a leader of the Kabataan party-list.

John Michael Tecson is the son of Alberto Tecson, who was the chairman of the Guihulngan City chapter of the national democratic fisherfolk organization Pamalakaya. Alberto was attacked and shot dead by six men on July 24, 2017.
