MANILA, Philippines — The International Criminal Court (ICC) said the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte was an important development in its "pursuit of accountability" in the situation in the Philippines for alleged crimes committed in the context of the so-called war on drugs.

In a statement, the ICC's Office of the Prosecutor said it welcomed "the arrest and transfer of the suspect Mr. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, former President of the Philippines," on March 11.
