DRY spells due to an El Niño could become more frequent and preparations have to be made to mitigate the impact on the country's farm sector, the chief of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) said on Friday.

“This kind of climate event is more likely to be more severe and more frequent in the future,” IRRI Director General Matthew Morell told reporters.
