ENVIRONMENT groups and fisherfolk lauded the Cebu provincial government for rejecting the Toledo City ordinance that would have allowed commercial fishing within 10.1 to 15 kilometers from the city’s coastline along Tañon Strait, the biggest marine protected area in the country.

The Sangguninang Panlungsod of Toledo City, a third-class component city of Cebu, on July 2 passed an ordinance allowing commercial fishing boats to fish inside city waters. But a mandatory review by the provincial government found the ordinance contrary to national laws.
