THE presence of Chinese vessels near and around Pag-asa island and other maritime features in the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) is "illegal," an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Thursday.

The Pag-asa Islands are part of the KIG, which is "an integral part of the Philippines over which it has sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction," Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Emmanuel Fernandez said amid the reported huge number of Chinese vessels circling Pagasa island in the contested West Philippine Sea (WPS).
