AGRICULTURE Secretary Emmanuel Piñol announced this week that his department was “considering” imposing protective tariffs against refined palm oil after statistics revealed a tenfold increase in imports from Malaysia and Indonesia. We suggest that the Department of Agriculture act quickly to do so.

Import statistics Piñol cited show that combined imports of refined palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia reached 320 million kilograms in 2017, an enormous increase from the approximately 30 million kg imported in 2016.
