PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte is opposing any military exercises in the disputed West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), saying it will only create "friction" and provoke China.

In a chance interview at the sidelines of the last day of the 33rd Association of Southeast Nations (Asean) Summit in Singapore on Thursday, Duterte admitted that China was "already in possession" of the West Philippine Sea and any military drills in the area would only create tensions among claimant countries.
