PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte downplayed his role in the return of the Balangiga bells to the country, saying they were brought back "upon the demand of the people."

"Let me be very clear on this here and now. The credit of the return of the Balangiga [bells] does not belong to any worker or officials of the government. The return of the bells [was] upon the demand of the Filipino people," Duterte said on Thursday in a speech during the unveiling of the marker of the Las Pinas Drug Rehabilitation Center and the birthday celebration of former senator Manny Villar.
