SOMETIME in June 1972, while cruising around Manila Bay on board the presidential yacht, President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Imelda got into a violent quarrel. In a rage, she scratched his face. He struck her face so hard it knocked her to the floor. He would later blame the media for the miscarriage she alleged. Marcos, who was on his last legally elected term as president, had found out about Imelda’s plans to succeed him. He wanted to put his wife in her place.
