The imposition of import duties will protect the domestic sugar industry amid plans to liberalize the entry of the sweetener, a Cabinet official said last week.

“The tariff will serve as the protection for the farmers and the proceeds can be used on the productivity side,” Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez told reporters last week amid industry warnings of social unrest and business disruptions.
