London-based watchdog Global Witness has named the Philippines as the “deadliest” country for environmental defenders, with the highest death toll recorded in 2018.

In its 2018 annual report, Global Witness documented 30 people killed in the Philippines, which include the “Sagay 9” in Negros Occidental. The Philippines surpassed Brazil, which had held the top spot since 2012.
