THE country’s palay (unhusked rice) and corn production are still expected to drop in the third quarter of the year because of typhoons and the southwest monsoon (habagat) that destroyed crops in vegetative stages, the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) said.

In its “Rice and Corn Estimates” report released on October 15, the PSA said palay production from July to September may reach 3.25 million metric tons (MT), 2.3 percent below the earlier forecast of 3.32 million MT and 4.2 percent lower than the 3.39 million MT output in 2017.
