The country’s manufacturing sector posted a sluggish start to 2019, an IHS Markit/Nikkei survey found, with output growth easing and employment falling in January amid a sharp rise in orders.

The latest seasonally adjusted Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell to 52.3 in January — the lowest since September and “markedly lower” than average — from 53.2 in December, Nikkei said in a statement.
