TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan: Fisherfolk here and in at least 10 towns in Cagayan Valley have expressed concern over the rapid spread and infestation of a dreaded fish specie – janitor fish (Pterygoplichtys pardalis) that has been affecting their livelihood. Gernaldo Camit, Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPA) Fishery Section head, said that communal bodies of water and fishpond areas in the towns of Gattaran, Lasam, Iguig, Amulung, Baggao, Solana, Enrile and, Tuguegarao City in Cagayan and the towns of Roxas and Quirino in Isabela are now infested with janitor fish. “Fisherfolk are complaining because most of their catch now comprise of janitor fish,” Camit said. To control its spread, BFAR is adopting a two-pronged approach through direct measures to eradicate it and promote its utilization as food or other purposes. Trainees will be sent to Marikina City in Metro Manila and in Laguna where they can learn the technology on fish processing and leather-making using janitor fish.
