Laude family wants prosecutor replaced

The family of slain Filipino transgender Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude asked Justice Secretary Leila De Lima on Monday to replace Olongapo City Prosecutor Emilie Delos Santos as lead public prosecutor in their case against US Marine Pfc Joseph Scott Pemberton.

Harry Roque accompanied his clients—Julita Cabillan and Malou Laude—to the Department of Justice (DOJ) where they aired their disappointments against Delos Santos, whom they accused of not representing their interest in the case.

De Los Santos has been very vocal during the preliminary investigation in Olongapo City that the lead counsel should be the public prosecutor and not Roque.

She insisted that Roque could only represent the family in the civil aspect of the case.

Other hand, Laude complained that Delos Santos refused to cooperate with the Laude family’s lawyers.

“The public prosecutor seems to be favoring the other side. She wants the charge changed to homicide, instead of murder,” Cabillan said.

As a result, the Laude family immediately junked all moves toward a plea bargaining agreement of the case.

“We will not settle even for a million dollars,”said Laude.

However, Delos Santos strongly denied initiating any plea bargain deal.

She stressed that she did not want the Laude case to turn into a circus and that she wants to be in control of the case for the interest of justice.
