Former world champion Dennis Orcollo is all set to defend his crown in the 2012 China Open 9-Ball tournament scheduled on May 12 to 19 in Shanghai, China.
Orcollo is coming off an impressive campaign in the United States circuit. He won three titles—2013 Derby City Classic Bigfoot 10-Ball Challenge, Jay Swanson Memorial and US Bar Box Championship Men’s 10-Ball—and a couple of runner-up finishes.
“It’s [defending the title]going to be a tough task since there are lots of good Chinese players plus the participation of some European players. I’ll just take it one game at a time,” said Orcollo, the 2011 World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Eight-Ball champion.
Orcollo ruled the 2012 edition by subduing Taiwanese Lu Hui Chan, 11-9, in the finals held at the Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium Arena.
Joining Orcollo in the eight-day event are Carlo Biado and Lee Van Corteza while other Filipino cue artists such as Warren Kiamco, Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamante, Ronnie Alcano, Antonio Lining and Roberto Gomez are also expected to participate.
The tournament also draws some notable players including Darren Appleton of Great Britain, Ralf Soquet of Germany, Ko Pin Yi of Taiwan, and Corey Deuel of US as well as the strong Chinese squad led by Liu Haitao, Liu Wei and Fu Jianbo.
Meanwhile, the WPA announced the postponement of the 2013 World 10-Ball Championships which was originally scheduled on June 8 to 15 in Oslo, Norway.
“Unfortunately the organizers, New Boy Promotions, were unable to secure the event and it was decided that in the best interest of everyone we postpone the event to a later period,” according to the statement of the world-governing body.
