‘Raketeros’ on the loose

They are back, and together for the first time on the big screen: Herbert Bautista, Ogie Alcasid, Joey Marquez, Dennis Padilla, Long Mejia and Andrew E

‘90s top comedians reunite for Randy Santiago film
Five of the most popular comedians of the ‘90s, namely Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista, Dennis Padilla, Long Mejia, Andrew E. and Ogie Alcasid, have reunited for what is now being dubbed in showbiz circles as the “ultimate throwback” movie of the year.

Good friends for many decades now, the gang is excited to see Raketeros hit the big screen on August 7, so much so because the entire shoot felt just like hanging out for them. The film’s director and their buddy Randy Santiago included.

“Ang tatay niya [the late Pablo Santiago]ay naging direktor naming lahat,” shared Mayor Herbert, whose sister Harlene’s young movie outfit Heaven’s Best is producing Raketeros, as distributed by Star Cinema. “Ngayon, it’s Randy’s time to shine.”

Ogie, who appears in his very first project in the movie after leaving his longtime network GMA 7 in July, agreed. “Ang Randy Santiago, icon na yan ng OPM; pero Randy is making his mark as a director here. Hindi kami pinapatulog para ma-achieve niya ang brand ng comedy na gusto niya para sa pelikula.”

Much as the gang had endless fun making the movie—as if they were just on one big “gimmick”—they took the task of making their audience laugh very seriously, with Randy at the helm.

“Walang slapstick dito sa Raketeros dahil ang gusto nating simulang brand of comedy ay yung situational comedy, meaning, may istorya talaga na nakakatawa,” promised the singer-cum-director in perpetual shades.

Mayor Herbert, whose clearly enjoying his return to acting added, “It’s also been a while since a gang movie has been made. Maganda lang ang tiyempo, at kahit siguro hindi na kami kilala ng mga kabataan ngayon, pinanood na ito ng mga anak ko at tawa sila ng tawa. Sa tingin ko naman magugustuhan din ito ng mga manonood ngayon.”

Raketeros follows the adventures and misadventures of a group of middle-aged male friends—Berto, the cable guy (Herbert); Mando, the driver (Dennis); Mulong, the billiards player (Long); Julio, the all-around singer (Ogie); and Andoy, a religious man (Andrew). As they gather to do a simple task of delivering an expensive gown to a rich man’s mansion, a series of hilarious mishaps puts them and their current “racket” in jeopardy.

To add more laughs, veteran comedian Joey Marquez is also included in the cast, along with a new generation of stars including Sam Pinto, Ryan Bang, Wendy Valdez, RR Enriquez, Regine Angeles, Tippy Dos Santos, Rodjun Cruz, Eula Caballero, Karen Reyes, Markki Stroem, Ryan Boyce, Yachang, IC Mendoza, Ahwel Paz, Patricia Ismael and Lassy.
